• Meet the new club secretary

  • On Monday May 31st Alan Kirk, our highly respected club secretary stood down after nearly five year’s service. We are indebted to him for his unstinting efforts and his dedication to the post.

The committee has asked Diane Birch OBE to step into the role. We asked Diane to tell us something about herself.

How long have you lived in Sidmouth?

I moved to Sidmouth four years ago when I retired from the Home Office after forty years’ service. My husband, Alan, took retirement at the same time and we moved here with our son, Edward, who now serves as a member of the Sidmouth Lifeboat crew.

How long have you been a member of the club?

I joined the club three years ago and was asked to serve on the committee nearly two years ago.

What do you consider your immediate tasks to be?

It’s not just my task but that of the committee too to help the club recover from the effects of the Covid Pandemic. The club has lost around two hundred members since the first lockdown because many weighed up the uncertainty of further lockdowns and social distancing against the cost of continuing membership and the possibility of the club not reopening for the foreseeable future. Now that the horizons are clearing members are re-joining and we gladly welcome them back. We are also making efforts to recruit new members since membership is the lifeblood of the club.

How do you propose to implement these tasks?

Firstly, the club needs to communicate properly with its members. We know we are failing at the moment with emails going astray. A lot of effort is going into putting this right but, as many computer users will know, a misplaced comma can cause chaos! Members should be receiving regular updates soon.
