  • A message from our Hon. Secretary

  • As many of you (if not all) will be aware, there has been a regrettable lack of communications between the Club Committee and Members for some time. This has largely been the result of problems with our email system, which I am glad to advise, have now been remedied. You will therefore now receive regular updates regarding current and planned initiatives.Members will wish to be aware of some changes in the Committee structure. Alan Kirk who has served us admirably as Club Secretary for several years, has left the post and I volunteered to take on the role of Club Secretary with effect from the 1st June and I am now your point of contact for club issues. We have also been joined by Gill Kimpton, Mike Goodier and Jackie Phillips. Julie Hart, Phil Minnett and Dave Tuckley have stepped down from the Committee and we thank them for their hard work during their tenures. The Committee members are as follows:President: Don NorthamTrustees: Pearl DeanPhil MidgelyBrian ReesChair of the Committee: Sonya CowleySecretary: Diane BirchTreasurer: Elsie MuirCommittee Members: Mike GoodierSimon JamesGill KimptonBill MuirJackie PhillipsNow that the Covid restrictions are largely behind us, we look forward to seeing our Members back to enjoy our facilities. Our current programme of events include Bingo on a Thursday night and Cabaret Nights alternating with a Quiz on Saturdays. We’ve introduced Guinness and San Miguel to the Bar and John Smith (the Chef and not the Brewery) has returned to do the Catering. John provides lunches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and on the Cabaret nights. At this stage bookings are advisable and you can contact John on the following number to make reservations.Mobile number: 07940 203748Kitchen number: 01395 577220I will be advising you of the menus in follow up emails. The task ahead of the Committee and me is to help the Club recover from the effects of the Covid pandemic, which has sadly depleted our membership numbers from around 500 or so to approximately 380. Largely I believe because many members weighed up the uncertainty of further lockdowns and social distancing against the cost of continuing membership. Now that the horizons are clearing, several ex members are rejoining and we gladly welcome them back. That said, we are also making efforts to recruit new Members, since membership is the lifeblood of the Club and given that this stood at a 1000 plus only a few years ago, we must take action now to assure our future. With that in mind, may I suggest that if any Member knows of friends or relatives who might benefit from membership, please contact me or any of the Committee Members. The fee for new Members at this time of year is £20 and given the changes that we are pursuing, such as refurbishment and with continuing competitive bar prices, the fee is a bargain. The Committee will also do their utmost to recruit Members and to this end, we will be advertising in the Sidmouth Herald and on our advertising board once it is installed. We are also on Facebook and we are in the process of updating our Website. We will be holding an AGM in September and due notification will be given. To sum up, the Club belongs to its Members and the Committee is here to serve you. That being so, we welcome new ideas that Members may wish to propose and rest assured that all will be given due consideration. Please email any ideas to me at this email or see me in the Club.Kind regardsDiane
